Program Design Criteria and Support
Design Criteria
Ted remarks “About twelve years ago I designed a computer-based training program to teach new technicians the principles of a plastic processing system. It was an excellent application of computer-based training since the process was very scientific and we were able to use video of the equipment and operations as well as computer simulations to demonstrate what was going on inside the processing equipment.
Subjects such as interpersonal communication, leadership and management also have basic principles but have as much art as they do science. These are topics that I personally feel are better taught with a live instructor where there can be discussion and interaction. I have therefore designed the Focused Management Leadership Strategy programs to be delivered by live instructors rather than on a computer disk. Being comfortable with a wide range of delivery options I pick the one that is best for the subject.
A classic approach is being utilized. Many of the topics are in two 1 hour sessions. The first hour tends to be a lecture where information is presented to the student because we assume that they do not know a tremendous amount about the subject. That does not mean that there is not interaction during the presentation, it just means that it is primarily a method of delivering a lot of information in a short period of time. The second session on the topic usually is application where we are trying to apply the principles from the first session to the participants’ organization or unit. So it is principal and then application. |

I do teach the principles of instructional design and therefore the leadership strategy follows three important design principles.
1. Simplify the complex
2. Make the invisible, visible
3. Provide an example
How to successfully lead and manage a unit or organization is a very complex and challenging subject. If that were not true most people would be wonderful leaders but we all know that the really good ones are few and far between.
Therefore our whole approach is based on the first two principles. The Management Model is a visual representation of the Leadership Strategy process that, when followed, will allow an individual to successfully lead people. For example, the Model stresses the importance of establishing a clear goal and prioritized objectives. The Model demonstrates the relationship between the different factors that make up effective leadership. For example, we stressed the need to balance structuring the job tasks with consideration for the people. The Model also communicates the principles of an effective organization. For example we highlight the importance of establishing functional systems within the organization.
The result is the course participants internalize a mental model of effective leadership and management that allows them to clearly understand what they are trying to accomplish. We have simplified a very complex topic and given them a way to visualize what was before invisible and mysterious.
No learning takes place without an example and although we have provided examples in the course this is one of the prime reasons why I wanted these programs delivered by a live instructor. It will be the instructor’s job, perhaps your job, to add into the program examples that are related to the course principles. These examples need to be based on the organization or environment that the participants come from.”
Program Support
“I will personally support your use of the Focused Management programs by conducting webinars that cover how to best utilize the programs. We can go through the entire program session if desired. The webinars are held with very small groups of people and sometimes with a single individual. I am also available via e-mail and will discuss specific questions with you on the telephone or VOIP.
I have been an instructor for over forty years so it is something that I enjoy doing. Hopefully I have learned a few things during that time which I will be glad to pass on to you. George and I want you to succeed. Besides we offer a money back guarantee so we really want you to succeed.
The Focused Management Leadership Strategy and Management Model provided a competitive advantage for our clients as well as for us as consultants and instructors of leadership and management. Here is your opportunity to gain this competitive advantage for you and your organization”
