The Nature of Organizations

Program Objectives, Contents and Components

The Purpose Of This Program Is To:

• Provide a unique and different way of looking at an organization

• Understand what an organization is in reality

• Understand the role “purpose” plays within an organization

• Understand how the four key constituent groups influence organizational survival

• Understand how some organizations react to adversity and what the constructive approaches are in a crisis

Program Contents:

This program is designed to question many people’s preconceived notions as to what a business is or what an organization is. People tend to think of organizations in terms of the organizational chart, the buildings, or the products and services. This is natural because that’s what we see.

The reality is that organizations are a network of human relationships tied together by an “institutional memory”. If a leader is going to influence an organization then the leaders need to focus more on the institutional memory than on the physical assets.

The second topic area talks about organizational purpose. Again, people tend to think they know what the purpose of their organization is but many do not actually know or have never given it much thought. This section of the program is designed to get people to think about organizational purpose and its importance in building organizational cohesion.

The third topic is aimed specifically at senior organizational leaders and their understanding of the dynamics of the four key constituent groups on which organizational survival depends. The program stresses the need to maintain a balance between customers, organizational members, the ownership, and society that is often represented by government agencies. Many leaders tend to select a group and place them above the others which is a hazardous strategy for organizational survival.

The final topic is an examination of how organizations respond to adversity and the most constructive responses to adversity.

Program Format:

This program is a lecture/discussion of approximately 2 hours. The PowerPoint presentation and instructor scripts have built in questions and opportunities for audience participation. Often people start out thinking they know the answers but once they get into the discussion they begin to recognize that there are other ways of looking at this common subject. Participants tend to become very interested in the topic because they are deeply involved in organizations.

Program components:

This program includes a PowerPoint presentation and presenter’s notes that provide approximately 2 hours of presentation and discussion. There are 70 PowerPoint slides and 70 pages of presentation scripts.

The written handout can be used as a comprehensive summary after the presentation. The handout is in two electronic formats, one in Microsoft Word and another copy in PDF. The Word copy is easy to change and it can be modified to suit your needs.
