Human Motivation

Program Objectives, Contents and Components

The Purpose Of This Program Is To:

• Understand what really motivates people

• Understand what frustrates people

• Apply the principles of human motivation so as to improve leadership effectiveness

• Apply human motivational principles to organizational policy and procedures

Program Contents:

The program begins with the definition of human motivation and what happens when an individual is faced with barriers to accomplishment and the resulting frustration.

A simple formula is introduced: M – F = A
The letters stand for Motivators minus Frustrations equals Attitude.

The core of the program is centered on the work of Dr. Frederick Herzberg and his studies of human motivation in the workplace. The Herzberg studies were conducted over 50 years ago but most experts feel that Dr. Herzberg got it right.

Each of the five key motivating factors are examined for their ability to impact people’s behavior, how intense or powerful the factor is, and how long it will continue to influence behavior.

Each of the five key factors that are primarily sources of frustration is also examined for their ability to impact people’s behavior. Again each factor is examined for impact, how powerful it is and how long it will affect people’s behavior.

Next, we examine the impact of motivation or frustration from the standpoint of organizational leaders. Two key questions are discussed with the participants. “Why would people work hard for your organization?”
“Why would people follow you?” These are important questions that need to be answered by people who are going to manage and lead organizations.

Program Format:

This program is a lecture/discussion of approximately 3 hours. The PowerPoint presentation instructor scripts have built in questions and opportunities for audience participation. The presenter acts more as a facilitator to get people to really examine each of the motivational factors and consider how they can apply this information their own leadership style as well is organizational policies and procedures.

As fundamental as an understanding of human motivation is to leadership and management, we have been surprised over the last 50 years how many people have never really examined this subject. Even those who are familiar with the topic of motivation find the discussion interesting and it never hurts any of us to review this important topic.

Program Components:

This program includes a PowerPoint presentation and presenter’s notes that provide approximately 3 hours of presentation and discussion. There are 56 PowerPoint slides and 56 pages of instructor scripts.

There is a printable copy of the Herzberg motivation chart which can be used during the presentation and the written handout can be used as a comprehensive summary after the presentation. The chart and handout are in electronic formats, both in Microsoft Word and in PDF. The Word copy is easy to change and can be modified to suit your needs. Page numbers are centered so it can be printed in a two-sided format.

The handout contains 22 single-sided pages, including a “quiz” that can be used toward the end of the presentation. As previously mentioned there is a one page printable copy of the motivation chart.
