Focused Management Model
Program Objectives, Contents and Components

The Purpose Of This Program Is To:
• Provide a visual model of effective leadership and management
• Provide a leadership strategy for leading and managing an organization
• Demonstrate how effective leadership and management components and systems relate to each other
• Present a “roadmap” that will lead to creating a more effective and responsive organization
Program Contents:
The program opens with the questions “Why would people follow you?” and “What is your strategy for leading an organization?”
We raise the issues of “What do you want to accomplish?” and “How do you want to accomplish the objectives?” There is a difference between the “what” and the “how” which leads to the concepts of “Structuring the work” and “Consideration for the people.”
There are two levels to the Focused Management Model.
The first level contains the five Universal components of effective management and leadership which are: Setting a goal and objectives; Defining who will do what and how to a standard; Leading the organization; Implementing the four major communication systems; plus measuring and monitoring Results.
The second level contains the model diagram that shows the relationship between all of the critical elements of effective leadership and management as they relate to organizational structure. Each of the key components is related and integrated with the five Universal components and with the concepts of Structure and Consideration.
The concepts and tasks involved in leading and managing an organization are complex; however, the Management Model simplifies these complex relationships down to a structure that is easily understood by people who have had experience within organizations.
The PowerPoint presentation is designed to carefully introduce each component of the Model so that the entire structure is built up one point at a time.
This presentation is built on 35 years of presenting the Focused Management Model and is specifically designed to tap into people’s prior experiences within organizations. Because the Model is based heavily on human psychology, it is therefore universally applicable to any organization. In 35 years we have never had a single individual disagree with the fundamental structure or concept of the Management Model. Once people see the model it makes intrinsic sense to them.
In addition to the PowerPoint presentation there is a interactive computer-based version of the model that allows users to look at any individual component of the model, receive a definition of that component, and specific examples of the component. The computer-based version allows people to “play” with the model and explore the relationships of the various components.
The program contains a printable booklet entitled “A Question of Leadership” which is a detailed, step-by-step explanation of the model in an interesting story format. The booklet can be used as a follow-up piece to the PowerPoint presentation, used a pre-reading or as a stand-alone component.
Note: Because the model presentation is built on people’s experience with organizations, this presentation is not very applicable to individuals with no prior experience within organizations. Therefore it is not appropriate at the high school or undergraduate college level. It is most appropriate for individuals who have several years of experience within an organization and are now moving up from an individual contributor role to a leadership/management role such as unit manager, departmental manager, divisional manager, or a senior executive position.
Program Format:
This program is a lecture/discussion of approximately 4 hours. The PowerPoint presentation and instructor scripts have built in questions and opportunities for audience participation. The program is designed to move fairly slowly so people have time to discuss each of the components and think about how they relate to the prior components. This topic requires people to think and therefore it tends to hold interest. We also suggest that you take a break every 45 to 50 minutes.
The format is conducive for senior managers who really want to examine their organization.
Program Components:
This program includes a PowerPoint presentation and presenters notes that provide approximately 4 hours of presentation and discussion. There are 59 PowerPoint slides and 59 pages of instructor scripts.
A printable written handout booklet can be used as a comprehensive summary after the presentation or the booklet can be used as an introduction to the model or as a stand-alone unit. The booklet is in two electronic formats, one in Microsoft Word and another copy in PDF. Page numbers are centered so it can be printed in a two-sided format.
The booklet contains 56 pages plus there is an additional nine page follow-up document to be used after the model presentation.
The program disk contains the Focused Management Model in a computer based visual aid format that can be downloaded on a computer. The interactive model is in two formats, one suitable for PCs and one compatible with the Apple® Macintosh format.
